What is a macaron? We’ve all seen them in magazines, and as they’re gaining popularity in North America, they’re also making their way onto the wedding scene. In fact, they’re so popular that even the McDonald’s in Paris sells them – McMacarons!

A macaron (not to be confused with the coconut macaroon) is a Parisian almond meringue “cookie” with a chocolate ganache, buttercream, jam, or caramel filling. These delectable treats were invented by the renowned Paris patisserie Ladurée, and later popularized by Pierre Hermé with his modern and interesting flavour combinations.
What makes these sweet little confections so irresistible are their delicate flavours infused with a soft and chewy shell. Not to mention that the shells can be tinted to just about any colour you can imagine, which makes them perfect wedding treats!

Many patisseries, chocolate shops, and home bakers are making their own little macarons with a creative new twist and local flavours. There’s the Tom Yam spicy Thai macaron, and the chocolate bacon macaron, or how about the hamburger macaron? YUM! :-)
